3.3 THE THEMES

...CONTINUED

Dirty water and poor sanitation are inextricably linked with ill-health, and people who lack access to these essentials face huge barriers to staying healthy. We therefore group these issues together, and much of our work to help communities grow healthier begins with a clean water project. So under this theme, we can talk about our water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives; and our vaccination and disease prevention work.

The key to a stronger Africa is passionate, skilled people, empowered to solve their own local health challenges. So every year we train thousands of skilled and dedicated people to work in their communities as nurses, doctors, midwives, health educators, community support workers and paramedics. This theme is where we can tell their stories and show their impact.
Where relevant, we can also feature the work of Amref University.

Healthy women change the world. When women aren’t held back by health struggles, they can transform the health and lives of their families and communities. So this theme is at the very heart of our vision and it’s where we can talk about areas of work such as infant and maternal care;  educating communities to end harmful practices like FGM/C; and improving reproductive and sexual health.

Communities face a range of challenges when trying to get health care, and we use our local knowledge to find innovative solutions. These range from mobile vaccination clinics and motorbike ambulances for remote rural areas, to trackers helping to protect girls from FGM/C. So this theme is the place to cover stories about Amref people as well as clever solutions to meet specific challenges.
