3.3 THE THEMES
...CONTINUED

You’ll probably notice that the four themes do not align exactly with Amref Health Africa’s Corporate Strategy. They reflect the findings of audience research in 2023, as well as the outcome of a survey among SLT members.
SLT members ranked our different areas of work according to three criteria: a) the level of need expressed by communities; b) our organisational ability to respond to that need; c) our ability to raise funds for work in this area.
The four themes you see here scored highly in all three areas, but themes which did not rank as highly will still feature in our communications.
For example, you might have expected to see climate change here. But although we can speak with authority about its impact and demonstrate how we’re responding to evolving needs, it is not yet an area of expertise for Amref Health Africa. This doesn’t mean that it won’t become one, and we may adjust and add to the themes as we go along.
In the meantime, the impact of the climate crisis on health is a cross-cutting issue that we can address through the lens of any of the four themes. This may be most evident with Water and Disease Prevention, but we can also talk about, for example, the gendered impact of climate change under Healthy Women. Meanwhile, the intersection of climate and health remains a priority in our global thought leadership and advocacy work.
Other cross-cutting themes include community-centredness, gender justice, equity, and outreach: the fact that Amref Health Africa always goes the last mile to reach individuals and groups who otherwise would not have access to life-saving healthcare.
